Grow Your Own 'continues' to be popular

08/02/2010

Grow Your Own 'continues' to be popularPeople will continue to grow their own fruit and vegetables, in spite of the recession ending, it has been claimed.

According to the Horticultural Trade Association (HTA), its members reported growth of six per cent in 2009.

Adam Wigglesworth, director of Ayletts Nurseries and member of the HTA Retail Management Committee said people are very interested in gardening, with more children also making it one of their hobbies.

"Standing in the shop last week I had to marvel at the resilience of our customers and trade," he said.

"Having had ten days of snow and cold weather, the shop was full of people buying seed potatoes and seeds; the grow your own boom will continue strongly in 2010," he added.

The HTA also noted that people are spending more time in the garden compared to any other period over the past few years.

Last month, the HTA asked gardeners to keep an eye out for longhorn beetles.
