RHS offers free seeds to encourage people to grow veg

Gardeners will be given free seeds as the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) aims to encourage people to grow their own.

The first 10,000 people and 50 companies who pledge to grow their own fruit and vegetables during 2010 will be give a free starter pack, which includes seeds, a wall planner and a range of recipes.

"This year we want to encourage individuals and companies to take up the growing mantle, because we believe gardening and growing makes happier and healthier people," the RHS said.

Among the fruit and vegetables which the organisation is encouraging people to grow are apples, carrots, beans, blueberries, herbs and potatoes.

Earlier this month, the RHS reported that rare snowdrops bulbs were being sold for nearly £165.

A single white Autumn Snow bulb, also known as G. reginae-olgae, has been sold on eBay for £162, while other rare examples are selling for over £100, it added.
